Repeals and re-enacts the NIMC Act 2007 — modernising the legal basis for the National Identity Number (NIN) and the national identity database for the digital-ID era.
On 26 June 2026 President Tinubu signed the repealed and re-enacted National Identity Management Commission Act 2026, replacing the outdated NIMC Act 2007. The re-enactment updates NIMC's mandate: strengthening the National Identity Number (NIN) system, the legal framework for the national identity database and its use across public and private services, data-sharing and verification rules, and the Commission's enforcement powers. The government framed it as a landmark for identity-linked service delivery and security, noting NIN-linked verification has aided criminal investigations.
