1 Background

The Nigeria Police Act 2020 replaced the colonial-era Police Act 1943 after eight decades. It modernised the constitutional and statutory framework of the Nigeria Police Force — codifying the duties of the Inspector-General of Police, setting a single 4-year tenure for the IGP (replacing the prior open-ended appointment), establishing Community Policing Committees at federal, state and LGA levels, expanding officer welfare provisions, and clarifying the procedural relationship between NPF and the Police Service Commission. The Act provides the legal scaffolding the 2020 #EndSARS protest movement implicitly demanded.
